We are so grateful for all of you who want to pray for and visit Maxine. She will forever be grateful for your love, support and prayers. Please continue to pray for her. At this time, the hospital is not accepting visitors, but we will let you know as soon as she is ready to see all of your friendly faces. Thank you again and please continue to pray.

Tuesday, September 30th (P.S.)

P.S. I forgot to mention in my earlier post from today that Grandma got to hold her great-grandson, Maverik, for the first time today! While she had met him and had lots of visits from him at the hospital, she didn't feel confident or strong enough to hold him. Plus, she had lots of tubes and wires that I was afraid might get pulled on by little Maverik's spazzy baby hands. But today she got to hold him for a little while. It was a very sweet moment for her and I was blessed to be able to have her hold my son before we head back to Arizona tomorrow. I'm so glad she's starting to feel a little better and I felt like her holding Maverik was a testament to her progress! Please continue to pray for little moments of success like this throughout her recovery. Her journey is slow and hard and she needs these little glimpses of hope to get her through.

Tuesday, September 30th

Grandma's first full day at the rehab facility went well. She really likes her physical therapists and while she is discouraged by her situation, she is positive about the therapy she is doing.

The nursing care is not as high-quality as what Grandmas has previously had at the hospital and that has been discouraging for her, so please pray she will get the sensitive and attentive care she needs while still being pushed to do the therapy that she needs to do to get better.

Please pray also for energy and strength for Donna as she cares for Grandma - she is by her side for many, many hours each day.

Thank you all again for lifting our family up in prayer. We feel so blessed and loved by all of you!

Monday, September 29th

Some big praises today! Thank you for your prayers yesterday for Grandma's mood - they worked! We saw considerable improvement in her mood today. Here's a conversation I had with her, that was very encouraging to me:

Grandma: I was thinking about the blog last night and I realized that I've been really selfish.

Jennifer:
How have you been selfish??

Grandma: I realized that I've been asking everyone to pray for me, but I haven't thought to ask them to pray for the wonderful people who have been taking care of me [at the hospital]. Please put that in the blog - for people to pray for the staff here. They have just taken such good care of me.

Now that's the Maxine we all know and love!!

Grandma also had much more color in her face today and got changed into some "street clothes" (a.k.a. - out of the hospital gown) which I think improved her mood considerably.

The BIG PRAISE is that Grandma got moved into the rehab facility today!! Please pray for courage, confidence, patience, and strength for her as she starts a very rigorous therapy schedule tomorrow. (She'll be doing therapy three times a day and needs to rest in-between, so she is still not able to accept visitors.) Please pray that she sees improvement (however small) as a positive accomplishment. She wants so badly to regain her independence, but isn't confident that it's achievable. As cheesy as it sounds, she needs to believe in order to achieve.

Sunday, September 28th

9:30 a.m.Jennifer here again. I'm visiting with Grandma this morning (she's resting right now) while Donna and Sarah go to church. They have been by Grandma's side almost constantly these last few weeks and haven't been able to attend since Grandma has been in the hospital. I'm hoping being able to go will be refreshing and encouraging for them.

Grandma seems tired this morning, which isn't entirely surprising since she had such a busy day yesterday (lots of visiting with family). Please, please continue to pray for her emotional health. She needs to find the hope that she can get better or she may not have the motivation to do the work she needs to do during recovery.

10:15 a.m.
Grandma just got back from walking with the physical therapists. They are so great with her - offering lots of encouragement even though she is very discouraged about her slow progress. I overheard one of them tell her, "God's not finished with you yet, so you've got to keep getting better!" She walked from her room to the doors leading out to the main hall of the hospital wing and back. This is further than she's walked before, so that's progress! Please pray that she'll begin to see it as such.

Saturday, September 27th

Maxine's granddaughter from Arizona, Jennifer, arrived yesterday and brought with her the newest great-grandchild, Maverik. Jen will be writing some blog posts during her visit.

Today was Grandma's first time meeting her greart-grandson, Maverik (now three-months-old). He seemed to cheer her up and gave her lots of big smiles, which she loved. In general, her mood was much improved this morning, though she's very nervous about going to the rehab center, so please pray for peace and confidence during the transition next week.

As always, I enjoyed chatting with Grandma (Sarah says it's a good thing I'm here to give Grandma new stories to listen to, because according to Sarah, Grandma is tired of hearing Sarah talk. Her words, not mine. ;-)) It is good to see that while physically weak, Grandma is still the same witty and wonderful woman on the inside. Do continue to pray for encouragement for her however, as she still feels very discouraged about her progress and is having a hard time seeing the light at the end of the recovery tunnel.

The big praise today is that the physical therapists were able to get Grandma to walk with her walker further than she has before. They may have used Maverik as motivation to get her to walk from her room to the bench in the hall were Sarah, Maverik, and I were sitting. Okay, who am I kidding, they totally leveraged Maverik's presence to make her walk further. Which is a good thing! Now she knows she can do it, even though it was tiring for her.

Thank you so much for your prayers - please keep them coming!

Friday September 26th.

The procedure went well for Grandma yesterday, and she is feeling better. She appreciates everyone's interest in her.

She will be going to a therapy center Monday. This will be a difficult challenge, but we hope and pray that it will strengthen her and get her back to the Maxine that we know and love at a quicker rate.

She is doing better on her walking. While it is difficult, she is working hard, and trying to have a positive attitude.

Thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray. She appreciates and is grateful for all of you.

Wednesday September 24th

Today was a pretty good day for Grandma. She was able to walk to her door and back twice today!

They also had an occupational therapist come in and they told us that she needs to be feeding herself and doing most activities for herself.

A negative for today is that they told us that they would most likely have to take fluid off of her lungs tomorrow. Last time they did this, she felt much better afterwards. However, this is a dangerous procedure. When they do this procedure, there is a possibility that her lung could collapse. Please pray against this. Pray that her lungs will do fine and that they will be stronger than every. Pray that the fluid stays off of her lungs.

Thank you for praying for her!

Please feel free to send her cards! If you send them to her home address, we will bring them up to the hospital.

She enjoys receiving cards!

Love you all and thank you for praying!

Tuesday September 23

Today has been a pretty good day. Grandma walked to her door and back. This was a big accomplishment. However, she has not been in a very good mood, and she seems very week. Her words are very mumbled. They say that it is because she has dry mouth, but it is not getting any better.

Please pray for her to have joy and strength. We are grateful that her walking is getting better, but she just seems so exhausted afterwards.

Thank you all for your prayers and please keep em coming!

Sunday September 21

Well, your prayers work. She is doing better. We were all so worried yesterday. It was like she had done a 180. She went from talking and joking around to being completely out of it and sleeping all day. Today she took 15 steps, and is currently sitting up in a chair. She is still not back to where she was, but we see improvement and that makes us very grateful to God.

Please continue to pray. Rod, Maxine's son, goes back to Arizona tomorrow. He has been a saint. Donna does not know what she would have done without him taking off work and being here. He has been up at the hospital from morning until late afternoon when Donna can be there after work. He leaves tomorrow to get back to his family. He missed his son's 18th birthday and his wife's 60th birthday this week. We will miss him, but we are grateful that his family will get him back. Pray for safe travel for him please.

Please pray for strength from Maxine. Pray for her to have a desire to eat. Pray for her to find her strength in the Lord. Please say thanks for how God has worked in her. We are grateful to Him every day that she is still with us, and cannot wait for her to get her strength back.

Blessings to you and your families.

Saturday September 20th

Grandma has had a really bad day. She called Uncle Rod this morning with slurred speech. She sounded horrible. When he got to the hospital, she was sitting up in her chair. When he walked in, she started throwing up and dry heaving. She was in so much pain. They have given her some medicine, and while it helps with nausea it also gets your stomach moving….

She has been sleeping for the last two hours, but is very discouraged. Please pray for her. Mornings seem to be bad. Please pray that her day gets better and that she will eat. She has not been eating well at all.

Thank you!

Friday September 19th

This morning was a discouraging time for Grandma. She had some nurses bring in her breakfast and just leave it. She is not yet capable to organize it all and feed herself well.

She also has no appetite at all, so she doesn't really have very much strength.

Please pray for strength for her. Pray that she gets her appetite back!

I brought up her favorite food (Tortilla Soup from Maguires) and she is eating it right now. They are also giving her chocolate milk shakes at every meal.

She had a few wired removed today and she had to have some fluid removed. That was difficult for her, but she is doing well now.

She is still not ready for visitors. Thank you for understanding.

She says hello to everyone and thank you for your prayers.

Sarah

Thursday September 18th

Grandma has been doing really well. Praise the Lord. She sat up in her chair again yesterday. She is getting her spirited fighting attitude back, and we are grateful to God for that.

She has been doing lots of laughing. I asked her if her chest hurt, and she said it only hurt when she coughed. So, I am glad it doesn't hurt when she laughs. She needs laughter right now.

I can't begin to thank you all enough for your prayers. Please continue to pray for her. She has the desire to start walking on her own again, so please pray that God would help her to do that. Pray for minimal pain, and that she would continue to seek Him during difficult times.

Thank you and God bless!
Sarah

Tuesday September 16th 9:30pm

I am sitting here with Grandma, and we have just had a great conversation.

She sat in a chair today, and she just told me that it was very hard, but she knew she had to do it to get out of here.

She wants me to tell you all thank you so much for the prayers.

She has a much better attitude today.

Rod, her son, brought up a white board and is writing scripture on it so that she can read it each day. This is very encouraging to her.

She has to sit in the chair again tomorrow. She just said, "They will think it's crazy that I want them to pray that I can sit in a chair." But that's what she wants so please pray for her to be able to do this again tomorrow.

She just said, "That'll give em some laughs, won't it?"

Thank you for your prayers and keep em coming!

The below was written by my uncle Rod earlier today.

"Mom has made very encouraging strides in the past 24 hours. Her voice is much stronger--almost back to normal. She's eating better, including this morning's breakfast of pancakes, melon, and yogurt. Not a lot, but considerably more that before.
But the big victory this morning was getting into her chair with the help of physical therapists. She even said that it wasn't as bad as she expected. I can't begin to tell you what a milestone that was. The physical therapistswere very pleased with how she did. She's now sitting comfortably in the chair. She even joked, "Don't take away my driver's license just yet."

Monday, September 15, 2014

Monday September 15th.

Although Mom is making physical progress on many fronts, she is deeply discouraged. The doctors consistently tell her that she is doing well given what she's been through, But, as you can imagine; the pain, discomfort, and emotional strain are telling her something different.
She is verbalizing well as of this morning. Even taking a little bit of oral nutrition in the form of apple sauce and chocolate shake.
My sister Donna's family are nearby, and they have been saints. Her daughter
Sarah is here from Guatemala. I don't know what any of us would do without them.
Many of you have said you're praying daily. Thank you! Today and in the coming days you can pray for emotional strength and encouragement for Mom. Also for those of us who are spending many hours caring for and encouraging Mom at the hospital.

Sunday NIght (Sept 14)

Grandma is off the ventilator but her problems, obviously, are not over. She is having a difficult time with all of this. Physically she is having a difficult time, but more so mentally.

If I just had a surgery like this and was in the pain she is in, I would have a hard time too.

So, we ask that you pray for her mentally and spiritually.

We pray for a bold and determined spirit in her that will want to get better.

We pray for her to have the joy of the Lord.

We pray for peace for her.

We pray for less pain.

Please pray for her. We want our determined and strong Maxine back. She can do this. We know it. We just want her to realize it.

Sunday September 14, 1:30

Maxine is off of the ventilator and doing well. Her breathing is fantastic. Praise God!

She has said a few words. She is very frustrated with how she feels. We need to pray for the Lord to encourage her and strengthen her. Pray that she can cling to Him and find her joy in Him.

She has had two drains out and there is one to go.

They are slowly getting liquids back into her system. They have now just given her ice chips, and she did very well with them.

Thank you so much for praying and caring. Please be in prayer for her to be in less pain and to have more joy.

She's Off The Ventilator!!!

At about 8:35 this morning they took Maxine off the ventilator. She did well! PRAISE the Lord! She is still not talking, but is breathing on her own quite well.

No news past that, but we are so grateful to God that she is breathing on her own.

Of course now she is going to begin all of the difficult tasks of moving around after a serious heart surgery, so please pray for her to be strong and patient.

We are still asking that friends wait to visit. She is still not in any position to greet anyone, and as of last night, she had a fever. We are trying to keep all germs out of her room. Thank you for understanding.

Will update as soon as we know more.

God Bless

Saturday September 13, 5:00 pm -7:30

I just sat up at the hospital with Grandma for a few hours. She was agitated when I tried to talk to her because she wanted to talk back and couldn't. She kept shaking her head no. I told her that they were going to try to get her off the ventilator tomorrow, and she shook her head no.

Also, when I tell her I am staying and reading a book, she shakes her head no. She is still typical Maxine even though she is on the ventilator. She doesn't want to put anyone out.

It is now evening and my mom just left the hospital. I am sitting up here with Grandma. They just cleaned out her lungs which is a horrible thing to watch. She seems super pissed. I would be too if I had a tube down my throat. Can you imagine not being able to reply to people? Also, I have realized how hard it is not to ask her questions.

I am currently playing the Gather Vocal Band Hymns for her. I know how much she loves them, and I am pretty sure she is tired of me talking to her and would rather just listen to music. Her eyes are closed, but I hope she can hear it. What could be better than hearing the words "Amazing Grace" from your favorite musical group.

They just came in and are going to start giving her food through a tube. They are also going to sedate her so that she can sleep tonight. They said that this won't mess up her chances of getting off the vent tomorrow, but more so will help her rest so that she has strength tomorrow.

Praise: The nurses told us today that just because she is on the ventilator doesn't mean anything bad. They are just trying to slowly ween her off. I know she wants it to be sooner rather than later, but we are glad that they are not concerned at all.

Praise: Her heart is beating strong. They have no concerns with her heart right now, and we are super grateful for that.

Prayer: Please just pray that she can get off of this stupid (yet wonderful) ventilator tomorrow. I am so tired of seeing her look like an invalid when I know there is such an amazing woman inside who has so many delightful and witty things to say.

Prayer: Please pray that somehow, in all of the confusion, that she could draw near to the Lord. That she could rest in Him and depend on Him. He is the only person she can have a conversation with right now, so please pray that God gives her peace and rest in Him.

Thank you all so much for your concern. She loves you and she appreciates you.

Sarah

Saturday September 13 12:00

We just got an update from the respiratory therapist and attending doctor about taking Mom's breathing tube out today. Mom's breathing is still good but still on the border of what it needs to be before they can take it out. So they've decided to try again tomorrow (Sunday).
Of course, it's disappointing to us. She needs to get the tube out so she can then get out of bed and begin physical therapy. But she also needs to get her breathing ability up to speed before that can happen.
Despite that news, I spoke with two doctors today who both said that her heart is doing very well. The doctors both also mentioned that the afib she was having is very normal. About half of bypass patients get it. She is no longer having it, but apparently it wasn't anything to be too alarmed about.
The several doctors we've spoken to have all been upbeat about her progress, given her age. But to us it feels painfully slow. Those of you who have had loved ones travel this road can identify, I'm sure.
Thank you for your continued prayers.

Rod.

Saturday September 13-9:00 AM

Last night, Maxine went into afib. They are not too worried about it because they say her heart is very strong. However, today she was in pain so they gave her some morphine. Right after they gave her the morphine the doctor came in and said that they should not be giving her so many pain medicines or she will never get off the ventilator.

So, that brings us to the ventilator. She is still on it. We are praying that she can get off of the vent today. Please pray with us. We want her to get off of it so that she can start to recover. They have realized that she needs to move slower than most patients, but it is still time for her to get off of it.

She is awake, but not very alert. We are hoping once they get the vent out that she can start acting more like herself.

Prayer: Pray that she can get the vent out today.

Praise: At 91, after a quadruple bypass surgery, she is alive. That is a praise for sure. We are grateful to God that He continues to bless us with her life here on earth.

Thank you for praying with us.

A Long Night

Rod and Donna were up at the hospital with Maxine for about 4 hours tonight. They were hoping she would get taken off of the ventilator. They started weening her off of it, but when they did a test (something with messing around with the tube in her mouth) she started freaking out on them. So, their plan was to try again later and do some other tests and such. Donna and Rod stayed up there for a few hours afterwards, but the nurse told them they might not actually get her off of it until the morning. They both want to be there for her as she becomes aware of her surroundings and is able to talk, but the hospital just can't give an exact time.

As you can imagine this is frustrating and Donna and Rod are tired.

Please pray for Maxine to get off of the ventilator and not have too much pain in her throat or have lips that are too dry (right now they are being dabbed with water every now and then).

Please pray for Maxine to remain in peace throughout this process.

Please pray for her to recover quickly from being on her back for over two days.

Please pray for the Lord to heal her while she is in this state, and for her pain to be as minimal as possible.

Please pray for Donna and Rod to sleep well when they are actually able to sleep.

Once again, thank you so much for praying for our sweet Grandma (This is Sarah writing). She is truly a blessing to our family and we don't know what we would do without her.

Blessings to you all as you pray blessings over my Grandma.

Sarah

Friday September 12: 3:40pm

They took the heart pump out of Maxine, and they are going to try to see if she can breath on her own tonight.

They say that she is doing well. She is being kind of responsive, but not as much as we would like. She kind of seems like she is in a daze. However, we would be too if we had all kinds of tubes coming out of us, and had just been woken up with a ventilator in.

Praise: That they were able to take the heart pump out and that her heart is pumping on its own.

Praise: They say she is doing really well. This is obviously hard for us to see because she doesn't look like her fantastic put together self.

Prayer: As they slowly take her off the ventilator tonight, please pray that she can make her own breaths. If she is able to, they will take the ventilator completely out. This will allow her to talk.

Prayer: Please pray that her pain will be minimal. I know that it is expected after a surgery like this, for her to be in a lot of pain, but our God can do anything. So, please pray for minimal pain and quick healing.

Prayer: Please pray that God will give her peace during this time. Pray that she is able to rest in the Lord and in His comfort.

Once again, thank you for praying. We love her so much and covet all of your prayers.

God Bless.

Friday, September 12

They still have Maxine sedated. She is on a ventilator and still has a balloon pump in her. They are hoping to wake her up later today. She had to get some blood last night, but they say that she is ok.

The hospital is not allowing visitors in her room at any time right now. We will let you know when she is ready to receive visitors.

We are asking for prayer for our favorite family member. She is a precious woman, and just as she has touched all of our lives, we are sure she has someway touched yours also.

Please pray that she is not fearful when they wake her up and she has a tube down her throat.

Please pray that the Lord will start to heal her while she is sleeping and will minimize her pain.

Please pray that she will have less pain in her feet. She will not be able to use much upper body strength and her feet have always given her issues. This will make it hard for her to walk with a walker, and it is almost impossible for her to walk without it.

Please pray that she puts her hope in the Lord and looks for her strength from Him. Only He will be able to get her through the next couple of weeks.

And finally, please pray for our family as we try to be there for her as much as possible. Please pray that schedules work out perfectly so that we can lavish her with love and help.

Psalm 107:19-21
"Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men."

Thank you so much for your prayers!
